Research
The Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Diabetes at UMMC is committed to clinical and translational research in diabetes, osteoporosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and other diverse topics in general endocrinology. Examples of several of our ongoing projects follow:
- Metabolic bone disease: Division faculty are conducting studies to determine the potential effect of diabetes medications on the trabecular bone score. Other studies include exploring novel opportunities for diagnosing osteoporosis utilizing imaging studies done for other indications and the impact of various chronic diseases on bone strength.
- PCOS: Our research seeks to understand the role of androgens in mediating the negative cardiometabolic profile often seen in patients with PCOS. Additionally, the basic research in our lab is focused on androgen regulation of adipose tissue using integrative physiological methods with whole animal, cellular, molecular, and imaging studies.
- Inpatient diabetes management and insulin safety, lipids, and metabolic syndrome: Faculty in the division have experience in multiple aspects of clinical and translational research in diabetes and metabolism. A small sampling of published literature is given below, (and a more detailed listing can be found by searching an individual faculty member’s name in PubMed).
